What does a typical session look like?
Sessions are varied and their format is dependent on your treatment focus. Some sessions are more goal focused and practical - essentially us putting our heads together to brainstorm and problem solve a specific topic. Others are more free-form and exploratory. Often this takes the form of getting curious about your present-day challenges and examining their links to past experiences and difficulties. This can also involve “insight’ where you are invited to turn your focus internally and observe your internal experience (emotions, sensations, memories, thoughts, images) as it relates to your presenting concerns.
-
Are sessions in-person?
Sessions will be held remotely through telehealth (video conferencing or phone) for the foreseeable future.

What is a Registered Psychotherapist?
Registered Psychotherapsists are trained professionals who typically hold a master’s degree in counselling psychology. Psychotherapists are licensed to provide the regulated act of psychotherapy. They differ from Psychologists in that psychotherapists are unable to diagnose mental health conditions.
-
How regularly should I book in sessions?
The frequency of sessions varies between individuals and is dependent on a number of factors such as treatment focus/goals, availability, financial constraints, etc. Generally, it is recommended to book in more frequently during the initial stages of treatment (weekly/biweekly), and then decrease over time as you notice progress in your goals.

Can I cover sessions through my insurance?
Increasingly, insurance providers are covering services provided by registered psychotherapists. I’d recommend checking with your insurance provider to see what professionals they cover.
-
Are your services HST exempt?
Unlike psychologists, social workers, and doctors, services provided by psychotherapists are not HST exempt as per federal law. This is because Psychotherapy is a newly regulated profession within Canada. In January of 2023, a petition will be brought before the House of Commons to amend a law that would include psychotherapy as an HST exempt service. You can read more about this HERE.
